Early Stage Responsible Innovation (ESRI)

Companies developing new products face increasing requirements around safety, sustainability, and regulation—often early in the innovation process, when information is still limited and decisions need to be made quickly. Existing assessment approaches are typically complex, slow, or require specialist expertise, making them impractical in early development.

Early Stage Responsible Innovation (ESRI) is an online tool developed by TNO that helps companies quickly identify potential risks, improvement opportunities, and compliance‑relevant considerations at the start of product development. It provides a fast, structured first check to support better‑informed decisions before major investments or design choices are locked in.

ESRI takes users through 12 short, easy‑to‑answer questions covering key business‑relevant topics such as product safety, environmental performance, material choices, social aspects, and anticipated regulatory requirements. No expert knowledge is required and assessments can be carried out in English or Dutch—whatever option fits your team and partners.

Based on the answers, ESRI delivers a clear overall Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) score, ranging from C– – to A++, providing a clear and visual overview of a product’s safety and sustainability performance. It also highlights areas that may require attention as development progresses.

By addressing a broad set of criteria that are relevant for regulatory frameworks, ESRI helps organisations structure discussions, both internally and within value chain, align early design choices with regulatory expectations, and prepare more efficiently for later, more detailed assessments. This comprehensive early insight supports shorter regulatory preparation times and product development cycles, more focused development efforts, and reduced risk of delays or redesigns further down the line.
